La polizia di Hong Kong ha dichiarato di aver arrestato 49 persone durante le manifestazioni non autorizzate di domenica. Inizialmente i raduni sono stati autorizzati dalle autorità, ma alcuni manifestanti hanno abbandonato la strada assegnata, bloccando le strade centrali. La polizia ha usato gas lacrimogeni negli scontri con i manifestanti.

”La polizia condanna fermamente le azioni illegali di un gruppo di manifestanti radicali che, a seguito di atti di vandalismo, hanno causato danni significativi alla proprietà dello stato, hanno commesso atti di incendio doloso e hanno attaccato la polizia con varie armi durante le proteste del 28 luglio. In relazione a ciò, la polizia ha arrestato 49 persone per crimini, tra cui la manifestazione non autorizzata ed il possesso di armi”, ha detto la polizia in una nota. Si è aggiunto che i manifestanti radicali stavano lanciando mattoni e bottiglie di vetro contro gli agenti di polizia.

Manifestazioni di massa sono scoppiate a Hong Kong dall’inizio di giugno mentre le autorità stavano prendendo in considerazione un disegno di legge che avrebbe permesso alla città cinese autonoma di estradare i sospettati nella Cina continentale. Sotto la pressione delle proteste, il governo ha sospeso indefinitamente il disegno di legge, mentre l’amministratore delegato di Hong Kong Carrie Lam ha presentato scuse pubbliche. Tuttavia, i manifestanti chiedono ancora il completo ritiro degli emendamenti di estradizione.

Hong Kong Police Detain Nearly 50 People Over Sunday Unrest – Hong Kong police said Monday that they had detained 49 people during unauthorized demonstrations on Sunday. The Sunday rallies were initially greenlighted by the authorities, but some protesters went off the prescribed route, blocking central streets. The police used tear gas in clashes with demonstrators.

”The police strongly condemn the illegal actions of a group of radical protesters who, as a result of acts of vandalism, caused significant damage to state property, committed acts of arson and attacked the police with various weapons during the protests on July 28 … In connection with yesterday’s incident, the police detained 49 people for crimes, including unauthorized assembly and possession of weapons,” the police said in a statement. The statement added that radical protesters were throwing bricks and glass bottles at police officers as well as shooting bows and crossbows.

Mass rallies erupted in Hong Kong in early June as the authorities were considering a bill that would allow the autonomous Chinese city to extradite suspects to mainland China. Pressured by the protests, the government indefinitely suspended the bill, while Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam issued a public apology. However, the protesters still demand the complete withdrawal of the extradition amendments.
