Il Segretario di Stato americano Mike Pompeo si recherà in Libano, Israele e Kuwait la prossima settimana per discussioni su una serie di questioni, compresi i colloqui con i leader israeliani, ciprioti e greci sulle questioni energetiche e di sicurezza nella regione del Mediterraneo. Lo ha detto il Dipartimento di Stato in un comunicato stampa.

“Il Segretario di Stato Michael R. Pompeo viaggerà a Beirut, Gerusalemme e Kuwait City dal 19 al 23 marzo”, ha detto il comunicato. “Mentre si trova a Gerusalemme, il Segretario parteciperà anche ad un incontro con i leader israeliani, ciprioti e greci per discutere le questioni chiave in materia di energia e sicurezza che la regione del Mediterraneo orientale si trova ad affrontare”.

Il Mediterraneo orientale è diventato una delle zone di perforazione offshore più calde del mondo, con una serie di importanti scoperte di gas naturale negli ultimi anni. Ma le controversie in corso sui confini marittimi – anche tra Libano e Israele, e tra Turchia e Cipro – hanno ostacolato gli sforzi per sviluppare le risorse.

Mentre si trova in Israele, Pompeo incontrerà anche funzionari israeliani per riaffermare l’impegno degli Stati Uniti per la sicurezza di Israele e gli sforzi dell’amministrazione Trump per combattere l’antisemitismo. A Kuwait City, il Segretario guiderà la delegazione statunitense al terzo dialogo strategico USA-Kuwait, che si concentrerà su aree di crescente cooperazione bilaterale, tra cui la difesa, l’antiterrorismo e la sicurezza informatica, così come i legami commerciali e gli investimenti.

A Beirut, la visita di Pompeo si concentrerà sulle sfide politiche, di sicurezza, economiche e umanitarie che il Libano deve affrontare. Pompeo enfatizzerà anche il sostegno degli Stati Uniti alle “legittime istituzioni statali del Libano”.


US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel to Lebanon, Israel and Kuwait next week for discussions on a range ofissues , including talks with Israeli, Cypriot and Greek leaders on energy and security issues in the Mediterranean region, the State Department said in a press release on Friday.

“Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo will travel to Beirut, Jerusalem, and Kuwait City March 19-23,” the release said. “While in Jerusalem, the Secretary will also participate in a meeting with Israeli, Cypriot, and Greek leaders to discuss key energy and security issues facing the Eastern Mediterranean region.”

The Eastern Mediterranean has become one of the world’s hottest offshore drilling zones, with a string of major natural gas discoveries in recent years. But ongoing maritime border disputes – including between Lebanon and Israel, and between Turkey and Cyprus – have hampered efforts to develop the resources.

While in Israel, Pompeo will also meet Israeli officials to reaffirm the US commitment to Israel’s security and Trump administration efforts to combat anti-Semitism, the release said.

In Kuwait City, the Secretary will lead the US delegation at the third US-Kuwait Strategic Dialogue, which will focus on areas of growing bilateral cooperation, including defense, counterterrorism and cybersecurity, as well as trade and investment ties, according to the release.

In Beirut, the Pompeo’s visit will focus on political, security, economic, and humanitarian challenges facing Lebanon, the release said. Pompeo will also emphasis US support for Lebanon’s “legitimate state institutions,” the release said.
