L’Unione europea non farà nuove offerte per risolvere la situazione di stallo sulla Brexit. Lo ha dichiarato il Presidente del Consiglio europeo Donald Tusk. Nel mese di gennaio, la Camera dei Comuni ha votato contro l’accordo concordato dall’Unione europea e dal governo britannico e successivamente ha approvato un emendamento che chiede soluzioni alternative al posto della clausola di protezione delle frontiere irlandesi.
“La posizione dell’UE-27 è chiara come espresso nei documenti concordati con il governo britannico: l’UE-27 non farà alcuna nuova offerta”, ha dichiarato Tusk ai giornalisti dopo un incontro con il primo ministro irlandese Leo Varadkar. Tusk ha aggiunto che non crede che il Regno Unito fosse in grado di rimanere nel blocco.
”So che ancora un gran numero di persone nel Regno Unito e nel continente così come in Irlanda desiderano un’inversione di questa decisione. Sono sempre stato con voi con tutto il mio cuore. Ma i fatti sono inequivocabili. Al momento la posizione pro-Brexit del primo ministro britannico e del leader dell’opposizione esclude questa questione”.
Il presidente del Consiglio europeo ha sottolineato che la soluzione comune è ancora possibile e si è impegnato a fare tutto ciò che è in suo potere per trovarla. “Il senso di responsabilità ci dice anche di prepararci a un possibile fiasco”, ha aggiunto Tusk.
The European Union is not making any new offers to resolve the deadlock over the Brexit deal that failed to make it through the UK parliament, President of the European Council Donald Tusk said Wednesday.
In January, the House of Commons voted against the deal agreed by the European Union and the UK government and later passed an amendment calling for alternative solutions instead of Irish border backstop clause. UK Prime Minister Theresa May is set to discuss such potential arrangements with President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker on Thursday.
”The position of the EU27 is clear as expressed in the documents agreed with the UK government, that is the withdrawal agreement and the political declaration. And the EU27 is not making any new offer,” Tusk told reporters after a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar.
Tusk added that he did not believe that the United Kingdom was able to stay in the bloc.
“I know that still a great number of people in the UK and on the continent as well as in Ireland wish for a reversal of this [Brexit] decision. I have always been with you with all my heart. But the facts are unmistakable. At the moment the pro-Brexit stance of the UK prime minister and the leader of the opposition rules out this question, today there is no political force and no effective leadership to remain. I say this without satisfaction, but you can’t argue with the facts,” Tusk said.
The European Council president stressed that the common solution was still possible and pledged to do everything in his power to find it.
“A sense of responsibility also tells us to prepare for a possible fiasco,” Tusk added.
