Lebanon wants to repatriate hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees by the end of this year, the head of Russia’s National Defense Control Center said Wednesday.
”Lebanese government declared its readiness to ensure repatriation of some 200,000 refugees back to Syria by the end of the year,” Col. Gen. Mikhail Mizintsev said at a meeting in Moscow of Russian and Syrian joint coordination committees on repatriation of refugees.
The high-ranking Russian officer emphasized that repatriation would be “purely voluntary” and in line with UN rules. He added that Jordan was likewise working to help Syrians return to their homes.
As the Syrian government has regained control over most of the country’s territories that were seized by terrorists, it is now focused on creating favorable conditions for repatriating refugees. Moscow is assisting Damascus in this, along with providing humanitarian aid to civilians and being a guarantor of the ceasefire.
