A dam storing hundreds of tonnes of chemical waste, located at the contact line in the conflict-torn Ukrainian Donbas region, has been destroyed, the Ukrainian Ministry of Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons said on Tuesday. “The destruction of a tailings dam of the Toretsk phenol plant located at the contact line has been registered. [The site] stores 270 tonnes of chemical waste, it is filled by 90 percent,” the ministry wrote on Twitter.Risks of chemical disaster in Donbas has long been a point of concern for the global community especially in the light of the repeated shelling of the Donetsk Water Filtration Station, which is located near the contact line. The facility has been storing tonnes of chemicals, and causing damage to it might result in an ecological and humanitarian catastrophe.Earlier in June, the plant halted its operations to prevent a crisis.
