The German branch of the SOS Mediterranee NGO confirmed on Tuesday that the Aquarius vessel, which has been stranded in the Mediterranean with over 600 migrants and asylum seekers on board, would go to the Port of Valencia in Spain.”Aquarius received confirmation: Port of Safety is #Valencia, #Spain. Teams relieved that solution starts to be found. However, results are unnecessary prolongation of time at sea for already vulnerable people & reduction of SAR capacity. Supplies now on board,” the NGO wrote on Twitter. On Sunday, Italy closed its ports to the vessel, carrying 629 migrants and asylum-seekers, saying that Malta was the closest and the safest port to accommodate it. The Maltese authorities, in their turn, said on Monday the issue was beyond their jurisdiction, and only decided to send foodstuff to the ship, but refused to accept it as well. The Spanish authorities said they were ready to accommodate Aquarius.
