The number of extremist crimes in Russia increased by almost 5 percent in 2017, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday, adding that over the past four years 3,000 websites with illegal content have been shut down. “As before, the most serious attention should be paid to counteracting extremism. Last year, the number of such crimes increased by almost 5 percent compared to 2016,” Putin said at a meeting of the Prosecutor General’s Office. The president noted that four years ago the prosecutors received authority to block websites containing extremist information. “Over these years, more than 3,000 Internet websites have been blocked at the request of prosecutors, direct calls for extremist activity have been removed from more than 70,000 websites,” Putin said.
