The Court of Justice of the European Union on Thursday confirmed in a press release that freezing of funds of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his son in 2015-2016 was justified and rejected the demand to void the sanctions.
In September 2016, the General Court annulled the freezing of funds for the period between March 6, 2014 and March 5, 2015, but confirmed the 2015-2016 sanctions. Victor Yanukovych and his son appealed this decision.
“The Court of Justice confirms the freezing of funds of Mr Viktor Yanukovych, former President of Ukraine, and of his son Oleksandr for the period from 6 March 2015 until 6 March 2016,” the press release said.
The 2014-2015 sanctions were imposed over alleged “misappropriation of Ukrainian State funds,” while the 2015-2016 extension was based on the fact that Yanukovych and his son were investigated by the Ukrainian authorities on suspicion of “misappropriation of public funds or assets.”
