La decisione di estendere le sanzioni anti-Russia dell’Unione europea non può essere presa automaticamente. Lo ha affermato il presidente del Consiglio, Paolo Gentiloni, al termine di un incontro con il presidente russo, Vladimir Putin. “Tutti sappiamo da dove provenivano queste sanzioni, conosciamo le decisioni adottate dall’Unione europea, erano tutte legate alla crisi ucraina – ha dewtto il premier italiano -. Sappiamo che una risposta positiva come la soppressione delle sanzioni è legata all’attuazione degli accordi di Minsk. Dal nostro punto di vista, i nostri sforzi che abbiamo fatto e continuano a fare nell’ambito dell’Unione europea e della NATO, è quello di sottolineare che non ci può essere alcuna estensione automatica delle sanzioni. Nessuno pensa che l’Italia taglierebbe unilateralmente i legami con i nostri alleati – ha concluso Gentiloni – ma, naturalmente, le decisioni relative alle sanzioni non dovrebbero essere prese automaticamente”.

The decision to extend the European Union’s anti-Russia sanctions cannot be taken automatically, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said Wednesday. “We all know where these sanctions came from, we know the decisions that were adopted by the European Union, they were all connected with the Ukrainian crisis. We know that a positive response [sanctions lifting] is connected with the implementation of the Minsk agreements. From our point of view, our efforts, which we have made and continue make within the framework of the European Union and NATO, is to emphasize that there can be no automatic extension of the sanctions,” Gentiloni told reporters following a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “No one thinks that Italy would unilaterally cut ties with our allies but, of course, decisions related to the sanctions should not be taken automatically,” the prime minister added.
