Ottawa è pronta per i negoziati sulla modernizzazione dell’Accordo di libero scambio nord atlantico(NAFTA). Lo ha detto a Sputnik l’ambasciatore del Canada in Messico, Pierre Alarie. “La cosa più importante per il Canada e il Messico è di sedersi al tavolo dei negoziati con gli Stati Uniti. Questo è un accordo trilaterale [del Canada, Messico e Stati Uniti], allora saremo in grado di ottenere risultati molto positivi per tutti tre paesi … NAFTA ha lavorato per 22 anni, rimane vantaggioso per il Canada, dovrebbe essere aggiornato”, ha detto Alarie. L’ambasciatore ha sottolineato che, quando l’accordo è stato creato, il commercio elettronico non esisteva. Il trattato dovrebbe includere anche disposizioni relative alla sfera dei diritti di proprietà intellettuale, ha aggiunto. “Il Canada è interessato al Messico e il Messico al Canada, il che è assolutamente giusto”, ha osservato Alarie. IL NAFTA è stato concluso nel 1994 tra Stati Uniti, Canada e Messico e ha eliminato un gran numero di dazi tra gli Stati Uniti e il Messico. Il commercio americano-canadese non è stato influenzato troppo, in quanto i due paesi avevano già un accordo simile in esecuzione già dalla fine degli anni ‘80. Il nuovo presidente degli Stati Uniti Donald Trump ha ripetutamente criticato il NAFTA, promettendo di rinegoziare il trattato per chiedere condizioni più favorevoli per gli Stati Uniti.

Ottawa is prepared for negotiations on the modernization of the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Canada’s Ambassador to Mexico Pierre Alarie told Sputnik. “The most important thing for Canada and Mexico is to sit down at the negotiating table with the United States. That is a trilateral agreement [of Canada, Mexico and the United States], then we will be able to get very positive results for all three countries … NAFTA has been working for 22 years, it remains profitable for Canada, it should be upgraded,” Alarie said. He pointed out that when the agreement was created there was no electronic commerce. The treaty should also include provisions concerning the sphere of intellectual property rights, the Canadian ambassador added. “Canada is interested in Mexico and Mexico – in Canada, that is absolutely right,” Alarie noted. NAFTA was concluded in 1994 between the United States, Canada and Mexico. The deal eliminated a large number of tariffs between the United States and Mexico. The US-Canadian trade was not affected much as the two countries already had a similar agreement running since the late 1980s. New US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized NAFTA promising to renegotiate the treaty to seek more favorable terms for the United States.
