This evening the Italian Cultural Institute in Madrid will host a chat entitled “Being a writer in today’s Europe” between three Italian authors, Diego Marani, Marco Mancassola and Chiara Mezzalama, who will talk to the Spanish audience about their writing experience in Europe. Diego Marani is a writer, translator and opinion maker who lives and works in Brussels as Policy Officer at the Servizio Europeo per l’Azione Esterna (SEAE). He invented the artificial language called Europanto which consists in a medley of all European languages. His books include the following novels: “Nuova grammatica finlandese” (Bompiani, 2000 and Grinzane Cavour Prize 2001), “L’ultimo dei vostiachi” (Bompiani, 2002, Premio Campiello 2002 – Selection of the Jury of Scholars and Premio Stresa), published in Spain by Gadir in 2005, “Il cacciatore di talenti” (Barbera, 2013) and “Lavorare manca” (Bompiani, 2014). Marco Mancassola is a narrator and journalist who lives and works in London. His works include: “La vita erotica dei superuomini” (Rizzoli Editore, 2008), “Non saremo confusi per sempre” (Einaudi, 2011), winner of the Under 40 Fiesole Narrative Prize, and “Gli amici del deserto” (Feltrinelli, 2013). Mancassola has also worked as journalist and playwright and contributed to writing the script of “All’amore assente”, the film directed by Andrea Adriatico, and of the documentary by Marco Segato, “L’uomo che amava il cinema”. At present, he writes for the online version of the weekly magazine Internazionale. Chiara Mezzalama is a writer, translator and psychotherapist and lives in Paris. Her first novel “Avrò cura di te”, was published by Edizioni E/O in 2009. She writes for the magazine Leggendaria of the Società Italiana delle Letterate, for the literary reading blog Tempoxme and contributes to the weekly called Left. “Il giardino persiano” is the title of her second novel (Edizioni E/O, 2015), in which she tells of her childhood in Iran at the time of Khomeini, where she lived with her father who served there as Italian Ambassador. She has also written a diary on the terrorist attacks in Paris entitled “Voglio essere Charlie: diario minimo di una scrittrice italiana a Parigi” published by Edizioni Estemporanee.
