Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov denied on Thursday reports circulating in US media of allegedly “stepped up” Russian military presence in Syria. “The Russian Defense Ministry implements measures to reduce the groups of Russian troops (forces) in accordance with the order of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces,” Konashenkov said. One of two US officials quoted in a Fox News report on Wednesday claimed that “we have sen new things coming in” from Russia to Syria. Konashenkov said that the first six in a group of Su-24 attack aircraft have been redeployed to Russia from the Hmeimm airfield. The withdrawal of other aircraft in addition to flight and engineering crews is planned for the near future, he added. The ministry spokesman issued a reminder of the widely reported plan for the Russian carrier group led by the Admiral Kuznetsov heavy carrier to return to its base in northern Russia. The carrier group, which includes more than 40 naval aviation aircraft, embarked from Mediterranean toward the Northern Fleet base in Severomorsk last Friday, January 6.
